Review: "Garrett" by Sawyer Bennett

Carolina Cold Fury star Garrett Samuelson never wants to miss out on a single minute of fun. Whether he’s playing hockey, hanging out with friends, or walking the red carpet with a new date on his arm, he lives every day to the fullest. When he meets Olivia Case, he sees someone who’s exactly his type—confident, sexy, smart . . . his next fling. But the more he pursues her, the more Garrett shares a side of himself that other women don’t normally get to see. Olivia has been keeping a secret. While Garrett lives for the next thrill, Olivia’s not sure she’ll live to see the next day. She’s undergoing treatment for some serious medical issues, and she doesn’t have time for a relationship with no guarantees—especially one with a hot-as-sin womanizer who won’t take no for an answer. But as she gets to know the real Garrett, Olivia can’t help falling for him . . . hard. To reveal the truth would mean risking everything—but you can’t score without taking the tough shots.

Did I like this book?

Meh...I don't know.  It was okay.  The thing is, I'm getting really tired of the same old storyline when it comes to romance.  It seems like every second book features a "man-whore" (and I really hate that word, by the way!) who is blindsided by the oh-so-special girl who is the only one who can make him want to change his ways.  I suppose this does happen in real life, although I can't think of one instance where it has, at least with people I know.  Possibly I don't know that many man-whores (men-whores?). Anyway, doesn't matter.  My point is, this storyline has been done repeatedly, it's old, it's not fresh, everybody stop writing these books!  Or maybe I just need to stop picking them...

There's nothing inherently wrong with this book, nothing that really got my goat, but there is a lot of "smirking" and "eye rolling" going on.  I didn't count, but it was enough for me to notice, and it's things like this that separate the wheat from the chaff.

The characters were actually quite likeable!  I didn't think I'd like Garrett from the first page - oh great, one of "those" guys! - but by the end, he'd grown on me a bit.  Olivia was great - she wasn't whiney or annoying, and considering everything she was dealing with, she certainly had every reason to be.  Her character, for me, is the most memorable part of this book.

As for the hockey, it could have been baseball or football for all it factored into the story.  I expected the hockey aspect to add something fresh and interesting to a tired storyline, but in this I was disappointed.  However, I found that Olivia's illness succeeded in this area, being handled quite well and keeping the plot from being too typical.

So yeah, things I liked and some I didn't. Kinda places "Garrett" in the middle of the pack.

Will you like this book?

I'm not sure.  This book has a relatively high rating and it seems like I'm in the minority, so you just might like it more than I did.  I guess it depends what you're looking for, but I have others on my list that I'd recommend first.

Will I read more by this author?

Probably not.  I wasn't impressed with the writing style, which is too bad because the next in the series is about a character who could have a very interesting story.

My rating:  2.5 stars

Review: "Miles From Kara" by Melissa West

Kara Marcus is desperate to forget the past and move on. But she can’t escape her choices—especially when she finds herself falling in love… Since the first day she stepped into her childhood Southern Baptist church, two truths have been engrained in Kara Marcus’s head: sex before marriage is bad and murder is a sin. And that’s why Kara can never forgive herself for what she did at the age of sixteen. Now, as second semester of freshman year comes to a close, Kara has stood by her high school boyfriend, Ethan. But as they seem to grow further and further apart every day, Kara realizes that she has feelings for someone else: Ethan’s roommate Colt. Suddenly, Kara’s clear-cut world shifts out of focus, and she’s torn between what her head tells her is right and what her heart is desperately pushing her to do—even if it means committing another undeniable sin...

Did I like this book?

In a word, yes.  This is an enjoyable read, and while it wasn't my favourite New Adult book, it is far from the bottom of the pile.

What we've got here are some decent characters, namely Kara and Colt, who've both got some baggage, but since the story is told from Kara's point of view, we are privy mostly to her issues.  While I liked Kara and empathized with her, I didn't love her - the feels just weren't there for me.  It's too bad, because other than this lack of connection with Kara, I felt that the book was quite well done.  The setting sounded great, the plot was well paced, and the supporting characters were interesting.

Will you like this book?

I guess it depends on whether you connect with the main character or not, but I think that most fans of New Adult books will enjoy "Miles From Kara".

Will I read more by this author?

This was my first read by Melissa West, and I did enjoy her writing style.  I'm interested in reading the other books in this series, but also her YA science fiction series, which is saying something as I'm not usually drawn to that genre.  Sounds like a good time, though!

Top Ten Tuesday- Top Ten Heroines!

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday, sponsored by the Broke and the Bookish:

What a fun topic!  I haven't done one of these memes in a while, but this one was too good to pass up!

The Kick Ass Dystopian Chicks:

I wonder if part of the reason dystopians were/are so popular is because the heroines are just so awesome.  Here are three of my favourites:

1.  Katniss from the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.

2.  Tris from the Divergent series by Veronica Roth.

3.  Saba from the Dust Lands series by Moira Young.

Girls I want to adopt and keep safe forever:

These are the girls who pull at my maternal heartstrings, and even though they usually end up surprising me with their strength, I just hate that they've had to go through what they've been through.

4.  Eleanor from Rainbow Rowell's "Eleanor and Park"

5.  Liesel from "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak

6.  Nastya from Katja Millay's "Sea of Tranquility"

7.  Jersey from Jennifer Brown's "Torn Away"

Ladies I want to hang around with just so I can laugh at them:

These girls had me in stitches with the constant messes they got into!

8.   Janet Evanovich's character, Stephanie Plum.  I stopped reading this series because it didn't seem to be going anywhere, but you've got to admit, Stephanie Plum is hysterical.  Honourable mention to Lula and Grandma Mazur!

9.  Helen Fielding's character, Bridget Jones.  Love her!

10.  Susan Juby's character, Alice MacLeod.  If you haven't read this series and you love to laugh, then you need to grab it ASAP!

And one more, just because it's my blog and I said so!

11.  Linda Hamilton's character, Sarah Connor, from Terminator 2.  Yeah, I know it's a movie and not a book, but she deserves a mention because of how inspirational she was to me.  I remember being fifteen or so, and seeing her doing those chin ups in prison with those bulging biceps, and I thought it was so wicked cool - I thought, "I wanna be able to do that one day!"  Sad to say that almost twenty five years later, those chin ups are still on the bucket list, sigh.  Maybe this year?

Thanks for popping by to see my list!  Leave a comment with a link to your TTT post and I'll be sure to comment back!

Review: "Lessons I Never Learned at Meadowbrook Academy" by Liz Maccie

The most important lessons aren't learned in the classroom. It’s the first day of sophomore year for Roberta Romano, but instead of the comfort of her local high school, she's been thrust into the elitist embrace of the affluent Meadowbrook Academy. Surrounded by wealth, Roberta battles her own insecurities, as well as evil teachers and mean girls, to prove her worth and maybe land the boy of her dreams. With the help of two unlikely allies — and an inflatable toy raft — Roberta embarks upon a journey of dark secrets and self-discovery to learn the true meaning of friendship and acceptance.

Thank you to Netgalley and Diversion Books for allowing me to read and review an ARC of this novel.

Wow, this book really caught me by surprise!  I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I can honestly say that I was impressed with the level of depth and intelligence displayed here.

Roberta is an excellent character!  I just loved her!!!  So. Much!  She's got so many facets, and I'm not going to describe all of them here, but she was continually surprising me.  I will say this - that cafeteria scene?  Friggin' awesome!

I loved how Maccie was able to thoroughly immerse me in Roberta's brain so I felt that I knew her.  For a rather quick read, I had no problem connecting with Roberta and her two new friends.  In fact, I loved Annie and Mervin almost as much as I loved Roberta, and that doesn't happen to me often with supporting characters.  Although there wasn't really a cliffhanger ending, I would love to read more about these three characters if Maccie were to continue writing this book into a series.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend "Lessons I Never Learned at Meadowbrook Academy" to anyone looking for a quick YA read with lovable  characters and some good laughs mixed in with some valuable life lessons.  I'm also looking forward to reading whatever Liz Maccie comes out with next!

Review: "The Geography of You and Me" by Jennifer E. Smith

Lucy and Owen meet somewhere between the tenth and eleventh floors of a New York City apartment building, on an elevator rendered useless by a citywide blackout. After they're rescued, they spend a single night together, wandering the darkened streets and marveling at the rare appearance of stars above Manhattan. But once the power is restored, so is reality. Lucy soon moves to Edinburgh with her parents, while Owen heads out west with his father. Lucy and Owen's relationship plays out across the globe as they stay in touch through postcards, occasional e-mails, and -- finally -- a reunion in the city where they first met. A carefully charted map of a long-distance relationship, Jennifer E. Smith's new novel shows that the center of the world isn't necessarily a place. It can be a person, too.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review an ARC of this book.

I think I must have been in the exact perfect mood to read this book because I really enjoyed my reading experience!  I admit this with a certain amount of surprise because when I think back over what happened in this book, there wasn't really a whole lot.  This is not an action-packed novel, and there's not even much as far as dialogue between the two main characters.  Owen and Lucy only speak in person a handful of times, and the rest of their communication is through one or two sentence postcards until the end of the book, so it's amazing that Smith was able to draw me into this story at all.  I should have been thoroughly bored, but found that I wasn't at all!

Owen and Lucy are not very typical characters, and I think that's what I loved most about them.  Lucy is very introverted to the point where she doesn't have a single friend.  She is happy to be alone and where I would be hesitant to wander around New York City as a fully grown adult, she seems right at home doing so as a teenager.  Her parents are often absent, and while it seems at first that they're just too busy to pay much attention to her, eventually we get to see their relationship become much stronger.  This was a definite strength of the book, in my opinion.

Owen, on the other hand, is unlike any hero I've ever read.  He's super smart, shy and sweet, and all around awesome - I loved him!  He has a completely different and new dynamic with his dad, feeling almost like he needs to be the adult in order to get his father through the grief of Owen's mom's death.  I really felt for him!  I was happy to see their relationship evolve into something more give and take through the course of the book as well.

I suppose I could go on and on about the ins and outs of this story, but I won't.  Suffice it to say that I liked it a lot, I think you'll probably like it too, and I'm looking forward to reading more from Jennifer E. Smith!  Oh yeah, and I now want to go to Edinburgh!!!

Review: "The Temp" by Emily Benet

Amber is a twenty-something, out of university with a degree she’s not sure what to do with… so she temps in order to earn enough money to live in London. One of her favourite life-hacks is to attend modern art gallery openings for free wine. It is during one of these that she thinks ‘if they can do it, why not me?’, and meeting a handsome gallery promoter cements her ambition to become famous through her art. With the help—and sometimes hindrance—of her friends Farrell, Bibiana, and Egg (short for Egbert), can Amber achieve her dream AND snag handsome Elliott?
Thank you to HarperImpulse via Netgalley for the review copy.
Did I like this book?

This book was a lot of fun, and while it wasn't without its problems, overall I quite enjoyed it.  The premise was interesting, the plot moved along at a decent pace, and I loved the setting of downtown London.  There were many times I found myself giggling at Amber and her antics - she definitely got into some tight spots!

But, although the characters were unique and oftentimes hilarious, I felt that they needed more depth.  I lacked any sort of connection with them, and it could have something to do with the fact that the book was written entirely from Amber's point of view.  While Amber is frequently amusing and constantly getting into mischief, she's also very flaky and irresponsible, not to mention self absorbed.  I would have loved to know more about her thee friends and what made them tick, but it was all just speculation on Amber's part.

Will you like this book?

This book reminds me a bit of "Bridget Jones's Diary", so if you enjoy that style of writing and humour, I think you'll probably enjoy "The Temp".

Will I read more by this author?

I think Emily Benet has tremendous potential and I will surely be interested in future books by her!

"Dirty Deeds" by Karina Halle - Release Day!

 “He’s fearless and ruthless. Soulless.”

As a flight attendant, Alana Bernal has had her share of suitors. She's also had more than her fair share of tragedy within her messed-up family. But what she hasn't had is love. Real, rip-your-heart-out, tear-your-clothes-off, all-consuming love.

At least that was the case until she met an American tourist, Derek Conway, a ripped ex-soldier with steely eyes and a commanding presence.

What started as a chance encounter between the two in Puerto Vallarta, a weekend full of hot sex and mindless passion, has led to something more.

Something deadly.

Because Derek isn't the type of man to fall in love. He's not a man who sticks around.
And he's definitely not in Mexico on vacation.

Derek is a mercenary, a killer-for-hire, a man who does the ugly jobs for the highest bidder.

Unfortunately for Alana and Derek, the highest bidder has the power to destroy whatever worlds they have created for themselves.

The highest bidder can destroy everything.

This is a romantic suspense book, #2 in the Dirty Angels trilogy but can be read as a standalone novel*

EXCERPT

Once we were in the back of the cab, she was sitting with her thigh flush against mine. I was somewhat dressed up – dark jeans, white and blue pinstriped dress shirt – and yet I could feel her heat through my clothing. That and her smell and the way her hair fell across her face, highlighting the coy glimpses of her eyes and smile, was driving me borderline insane. Though we made small chat throughout the ride, my mind was elsewhere, concentrating on keeping that well-earned control I had. I had to focus on the task at hand, which of course was her. But not in that way. I needed in deep, for her own safety and my own sanity.
It took a long time to finally get to the restaurant, located in the old town of Puerto Vallarta, despite the driver cutting everyone off along the way. You either drove aggressively around here or you didn’t drive at all.
“Thank you,” she said to me as I took her arm and helped her out of the cab. When she straightened up she looked at the place and made an impressed face. “Wow. You know, I’ve never been here before and I’ve lived in PV for a long time.”
“First time for everything then.”
I picked the place because it looked a bit different from the tourist traps in the downtown area. There wasn’t much to the outside except for a tall stone fence topped with strangling vines and flowers that bloomed like white and magenta cotton balls. But on the other side of the cast-iron gate was a different story.

I helped her over there, even though she was walking so much better now on her cast, and a waiter opened it up, giving us a hearty welcome to Coconut Joes. I gave him the reservation name and he led us through tables with ivory-lace tablecloths, past a clear blue pool with koi fish and a waterfall, under dramatic palm fronds, and all the way to a table in the back corner with a lit candle on it. The place wasn’t anything too outrageous or stuffy but it was just classy enough.
“Again, wow,” Alana said as I helped her into seat. I was starting to like being her nurse. She looked around, her cheeks glowing beautifully in the candlelight. “This is something.”
“Something good?” I asked as the server poured us bottled water.
“More than good,” she said. “The guys I dated never brought me places like this.”
Something pinched in my chest. “Oh? They take you to McDonalds?”
She gave me a look. “Most of the men I dated were pilots. They would take me somewhere really snobby and expensive to try and seem better than they were.” She took a polite sip of her water and straightened her napkin on her lap. Every day, her pain seemed to be easing, her movements becoming more fluid. “Then the next night they would take some other stupid flight attendant to the same place.”
As much as I felt an unjustified hit of jealousy, she was giving me some information, something I could work with.
“So I guess there’s a lot of drama in the workplace, huh?” I said casually, eying the waiter who was approaching us with menus in hand. In the background “Morena de Mi Corazon” started to play from the speakers. “Spurned lovers and revenge in the air,” I added.
She laughed. “No, not really. It was my fault. Rookie mistake to date a pilot…even though I did more than a few times.” She looked away, embarrassed. “Most guys I date are a mistake but no one seems to get hurt.”
So that probably ruled out the whole spurned lover angle. Not that I thought an ex-lover could or would attempt to have her taken out and for that amount of money. Love made people do crazy fucking things but that would have been a first in my books. Besides, if she did have an obsessed ex-boyfriend then I was sure I’d find out about him sooner or later.
The waiter came by and told us the specials. I ordered for the both of us – seared Ahi – because I’d never done that before, not even with Carmen, and made sure he kept the bottles of wine coming.
She was about three glasses of wine in, giggly and eating her fish with gusto when I started pressing her.
“So do you have any siblings?”
The smile seemed to vanish right off her face. There. I had something there. No matter what her answer was, I hit a nail.
“I have a twin sister and a brother,” she answered simply.
“Oh? And where do they live? What do they do?”
She relaxed her jaw a bit and took a bite of her rice. “My sister, Marguerite, she lives in New York. Goes to film school.”
Hmmm. That placed her out of range and a student at that.
“And your brother?”
“He lives around here.”
“In Puerto Vallarta?”
She shot me a wary look. “Around here. But he’s an asshole and I’d rather not talk about him.”
I raised my brow. “An asshole? What makes you say that?”
“I just do,” she said stubbornly. Then she sighed. “He just is. Every family has a…what do you say, black sheep. Right? Well, that’s him.”
“What’s his name?”
She bit her lip and said, “Juan.”
I didn’t know her well enough to tell if she was lying or not. I’m not sure why she would lie about her own brother.
I pressed it further. “What does he do?”
“He’s in importing and exporting. Trade with America. That sort of thing.”
Well, we all knew what that meant down here. Running drugs, like everyone else. Still, that gave me something to go on. Of course the name Juan didn’t help me much.
“What’s his last name, his surnames?” I asked, knowing that sometimes the men in Mexico took on their mother’s maiden names as well as their father’s.
“Bardem,” she said without hesitation. “Why all the questions?”
I shrugged and leaned back in my seat. “Just want to know more about you.”
Her brows knitted together as she eyed me suspiciously. “Maybe so, but you’re asking with this look on your face, like you’re all David Caruso.”
“David Caruso?”
“CSI Miami. It’s still my favorite, I don’t care for the other ones.”
“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint you but I don’t have the hair to be David Caruso, nor do I have the sunglasses and quippy one-liners.”
She took a sip of her wine but couldn’t hide her smile. Good, she was back to trusting me again. I wanted to ask her about her parents but I thought that would be pushing my luck. Whoever they were to her though, they were either dead or out of the picture. They had never come to see her in the hospital and the truth about her brother and sister explained why they hadn’t either.
What the hell have you done, Alana? I asked in my head as I stared at her across the table, the light illuminating her in an angelic way. Why would anyone pay me two hundred thousand dollars to have you killed?
And how the hell would I ever know the answers to those questions without incriminating myself?

From the USA Today Bestselling author of Love, in English and The Artists Trilogy, comes a dark romance about a good girl and a very, very bad man. It’s a deliciously twisted take on forbidden love, set among the drug cartels of hot, steamy Mexico and is not for the faint of heart. It contains explicit sex, violence, abuse, drug use, bad language and sexy Mexicans. You have been warned…

For Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she’s had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she’s never had the one thing she’s craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive.

When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can’t afford to pass up. She’ll become Salvador’s wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can’t undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move.

Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she’s leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible.
As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal target for rival cartels and there’s one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel’s expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants.

That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her.
Unless she ruins him first.
Some men were born to create empires, some women were meant to be queen.

**Dirty Angels is the first standalone novel in the Dirty Angels Trilogy, in which all books feature or involve different characters. The character of Javier Bernal is from The Artists Trilogy, and while reading TAT is recommended if you want additional insight into this twisted character, it is not required.**
